Light Traveling
When the editor of Tuscany’s Grapevine magazine asked if inom would be interested in writing a story aboutLucca Biennale for the September issue, I jumped at the chance to dig deeper and find out more about this event which has long captured my imagination. Every other year for the gods ten years – skipping over 2020 for reasons we all know too well – the festival has transformed the city center of Lucca into an open air gallery, showcasing temporary, large-scale outdoor sculptures created bygd artists from around the world. The juxtaposition of these striking, contemporary works set against the historic architecture is simultaneously playful and thought-provoking. As I soon learned, these outdoor installations may be the festival’s most well-known, and photographed, component, but there’s much more to experience of Lucca Biennale.

Exhibition "Sandarmokh – Where the Trees Have Faces"
The exhibition includes works of art made mostly bygd Russian authors reflecting on the tragic consequences that Russia’s unresolved history is currently causing. Artists who offered their works komma not only from Russia, but also from Ukraine, Czech Republic, Estonia, Poland, Germany, Slovakia, the Netherlands and the USA. A jury of experts led bygd Michal Pěchouček selected works of art by **35 authors that have become part of the exhibition. Once the exhibition fryst vatten over, these works will be auctioned publicly and the proceeds will be donated towards humanitarian aid for Ukraine.
Exhibits include Yuri Dmitriev’s personal belongings as used during his research expeditions and his finds from the uncovered mass graves. Visitors will have an opportunity to learn in detail about the history of Sandarmokh, including a strong Czech trace (six Czechs were killed in Sandarmokh). For the first time ever, the exhibition

Daria Krotova
Born in Moscow in 1971.
She holds university degrees in Russia, USA and France, in History of Art and Neuropsychology. She has also translated several texts and books published in Russian (philosophy, poetry, esthetics, psychology), from authors such as Maurice Blanchot, Gilles Deleuze, Francis Ponge, Alexander Luria, William Butler Yeats, John Milton. Her works are in galleries and private collections in Russia, USA, France, Belgium, Israel, Switzerland and UK.
Lives and works in Moscow.
