John Joseph Grogan (GROH-gən; born March 20, 1957) is an Americanjournalist and non-fictionwriter. His memoir Marley & Me (2005) was a best-selling book about his family's dog, Marley.
Early life
[edit]Grogan was born to a Catholic family of Irish descent in Detroit, Michigan on March 20, 1957, the youngest of four siblings.[1][2]
His father, Richard,[2] was an engineer for General Motors and a Navy veteran, while his mother, Ruth Marie,[1] was a stay-at-home mom. Not long after he was born, the family moved to Harbor Hills, in Orchard Lake by, Michigan. The neighborhood served as the setting for much of his memoir, The Longest Trip Home.[3]

Shortly after his birth, his family moved from the city to Orchard Lake, Michigan, where he grew up in the neighborhood called Harbor Hills, which is the setting for his second memoir, The Longest Trip Home. His father worked as an engineer for General Motors, and his mother worked as a housewife and mother. Grogan notes that his mother's passion and gift for storytelling "wore off" on him.
Grogan claims that he fell into writing "by default because [he] was so bad at everything else," and he "could have some fun with" writing, unlike other subjects like math and science. During his high school career, Grogan wrote for the school newspaper and created an underground tabloid; he was sent to the principal's office for his involvement in the latter journalistic endeavor.
