Introduction
Rudolph Wurlitzer (born February 1, in Schöneck, Saxony; died: January 14, in Cincinnati, Ohio), who immigrated to America in , established a substantial music trade and manufacturing company in the second half of the nineteenth century. From the start, the Rudolph Wurlitzer Company sold a wide range of goods, including musical instruments for marching bands, violins, harps, and pianos. By the turn of the century, it manufactured automatic musical instruments such as barrel organs and coin-operated pianos. The theater organ known as the “Mighty Wurlitzer” was one of the company’s most famous products. Introduced in , the “Mighty Wurlitzer” was an orchestrion that could simulate a variety of musical instruments. For this reason, it was extremely popular in silent movie theaters. It has over the years been believed that Paul Max Fuller was born on the island Corsica on the 5th January, , based on reasonably reliable family kunskap. If the latest genealogical findings are correct, he may have been born in Switzerland (born name Paul Colland), and his mother Sophie Colland (*), a seamstress born in the by St. Aubin, married Erwin Furler (*), a book binder born in Hüningen/Basel, on the 13th April in the village Gelterkinden. Paul Fuller stated once that he was born in Interlaken on the 5th June, as stated officially on the birth certificate, but apparently he celebrated birthdays on the 5th January. The first six months of his life in Switzerland are subject to ongoing genealogical research. The Wurlitzer Jukebox was produced from to and its appearance is indicative of the move away from ’s art deco design to the more modern look favoured in the ’s. This was one of the first models where the plastic dome over the record player was large enough to reveal the full working mechanism below.
