    Robert Maynard Pirsig (September 6, &#; April 24, )[1] was an American writer and philosopher.[2] He is known for writing many philosophy books. They include: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values () and Lila: An Inquiry into Morals ().

    Pirsig was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He died on April 24, at his home in South Berwick, Maine from a long-illness, aged [3]

      September 6, , witnessed the birth of Robert Maynard Pirsig in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is the author of the cult classic, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Pirsig's father, Maynard, taught at the University of Minnesota Law School from until retiring in He served as Dean from to Pirsig's mother, Harriet Marie Pirsig (Sjobeck), is of Swedish origin.

      By the age of 9, Pirsig, a precocious child, already possessed an I.Q. of He was promoted over several grades, and his lack of normal socialization, combined with a vexing språk, made childhood difficult for him.

      In , Pirsig entered the University of Minnesota, where he struggled for the next two years with his classes. He was expelled in for failing grades, immaturity, and inattention to his studies.       He's written two novels. If you can call them novels. Maybe you'd prefer to call them works of philosophy, thinly—very thinly—disguised as fiction.

      Or perhaps you'd be more accurate to call them memoirs, heavy on recalling some rather abstruse philosophical discussions Robert Maynard Pirsig has had with himself.

      Or better yet, call the first of the two books, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values, a massive bestseller that struck the nascent New Age movement of the s like the clap of a single hand and has infuriated professional novelists and philosophers with its continued popularity ever since.
