    Silvia Pinal Hidalgo[a] (12 September 1931 – 28 November 2024) was a Mexican actress. She began her career in theatre before venturing into cinema in 1949. She became one of the greatest female stars of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema and, with her performance in Shark! (1969), part of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Her work in film and popularity in her native country led Pinal to work in Europe, particularly in Spain and Italy. Pinal achieved international recognition by starring in a trilogy of films directed by Luis Buñuel: Viridiana (1961), The Exterminating Angel (1962) and Simon of the Desert (1965).

    Silvia Pinal, the revered rulle and television actress who left an indelible mark on Mexico’s Golden Age of Cinema, died Thursday. She was 93. 

    Mexico’s culture secretary, Claudia Curiel de Icaza, and the Asociación Nacional dem Intérpretes announced her death on social media. The Associated Press reported that Pinal had been hospitalized for a urinary infection several days ago. 

    During a prolific acting and producing career that spanned seven decades, Pinal gained international fame for toplining three 1960s classics written and directed by Luis Buñuel: the Palme d’Or co-winner Viridiana (1961), The Exterminating Angel (1962) and Simon of the Desert (1965).

    Silvia Pinal (born Silvia Pinal Hidalgo on September 12, 1931 in Guaymas, Sonora) is a Mexican actress, who had roles in several of Luis Buñuel's movies such as El ángel exterminador and Viridiana.

    Personal life

    Silvia Pinal has been married four times, first to Cuban actor Rafael Banquells who fathered a daughter with her, actress Silvia Pasquel (Pasquel is a combination of the surnames Pinal and Banquells). She then married Gustavo Alatriste, a businessman turned movie producer was the father of her daughter, Viridiana Alatriste Pinal (January 17, 1963 - October 25, 1982), who was killed in a car crash at the age of 19. Pinal later married Enrique Guzmán, a Caracas, Venezuela-born Mexican actor and singer. They had two children, Enrique Guzmán, Jr. and Alejandra Guzmán. Silvia Pinal and Enrique, Sr. hosted a TV show in the 1960s, but later divorced. Her last husband was Tulio Hernandez, whom she married in 1982; the union ended in 1995.
