BIOGRAPHY
George Albert Smith (commonly known as George A. Smith to distinguish him from his grandson of the same name) was an early leader in the Latter-day Saint movement.Smith was born June 26, in Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, New York. He was the son of John Smith and Clarissa Lyman, and a cousin of Mormon church founder, Joseph Smith Jr.
On April 26, , George A. Smith was ordained an Apostle and became a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church.
Smith led a company of volunteers and about 30 families to establish a colony near the Little Salt Lake in Iron County. They arrived at Centre Creek, miles from Salt Lake City, on January 13, Under direction from the General Assembly of Deseret, the group organized the political entity of Iron County and elected Smith as chief justice. George Albert Smith served as the eighth President of the Church between and Born on April 4, , he grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, with his mother, Sarah Farr Smith, and his father, John Henry Smith (later an Apostle and a counselor in the First Presidency). As a youth, George worked at a factory and department store in Salt Lake City, earning a position in the company that he credited with building his work ethic. In , he started work as a railway surveyor in the deserts of the western United States and suffered permanent eye damage from sunlight glare. Despite physical discomfort, George responded to a uppdrag call from Church President Wilford Woodruff to visit southern Utah and organize stake chapters of the Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Association.
After returning from this short mission, he courted and soon married his childhood neighbor and sweetheart, Lucy Woodruff. Three weeks before the wedding, George received a mission call to the Southern States
