Introduction
Dante Alighieri (1265-1321 CE) was an Italian poet and politician who is most famous for his Divine Comedy (c. 1319 CE) where Dante himself descends through Hell, climbs Purgatory, and arrives at the illumination of Paradise, meeting all sorts of historical characters along the way, including his guide, the Roman poet Virgil (70-19 BCE). It is considered one of the greatest works of medieval literature. An innovative poet, Dante’s work became a bridge between medieval and Renaissance Europe as the focus of art and thought shifted from religious affairs to those of humanity. Active in politics in his home city of Florence, he was eventually exiled for his views against what he saw as the abuse of power and corruption of the popes. In or around 1265, Dante was born in Florence, Italy. He was most certainly born in that year, based on hints from his Divine Comedy, however the precise date is uncertain. Dante mentioned a cousin called Cacciaguida degli Elisei who was born about in 1100 and said that his family was derived from ancient Romans.
Alighiero di Bellincione, his father, was a White Guelph who suffered no retaliation even after the Ghibellines prevailed at the Battle of Montaperti. Dante's family opposed the Ghibellines, who were backed by the Holy Roman Emperor, by supporting the Guelphs, a political party associated with the Papacy. When poet was a little boy, his mother Bella passed away, and his father remarried and had two more children with Lapa di Chiarissimo Cialuffi.
