1891 Armed Conflict Between Manipur Kingdom and British
The Anglo-Manipur War[6] or Manipuri Rebellion of 1891[9] was a short armed conflict between the British Colonial Forces and the dissenting royal princes of Manipur Kingdom, which was arguably a dependency of the British Empire in India. The conflict began with a palace coup staged by the general (Senapati) of Manipur, ousting its reigning king, and installing a half-brother, the heir-apparent, in his place. The British government took objection to the action and attempted to arrest the general. The effort failed, with the Manipuri forces attacking the British residency and the resident and other British officials getting executed. The British launched a punitive expedition that lasted from 31 March to 27 April 1891. The general and other rebels were arrested and convicted. Introduction
On the 13th of August, 1891, some one hundred and twenty seven years ago, after a great victory in the Anglo-Manipur war in April, the soldiers of the British Empire brought out the two heroes of Manipur, the 36-year old YubarajTikendrajit, and the octogenarianThangal General to be hanged in front of the conquered public at 5 pm at a place called Pheidabung, near the women’s marknad. Manipur pays tribute to 1891 war heroes
It was on this day in 1891, Manipuri prince Bir Tikendrajit Singh and general Thangal were hanged by the British in the heart of Imphal on charges of waging war against the queen.
The state function was held in the evening at Bir Tikendrajit Park, the place where the two were hanged in.Chief minister Okram Ibobi Singhled the people in paying floral tributes to the heroes.
In the morning, Ibobi Singh, deputy CM Gaikhangam, cabinet ministers and legislators, along with senior officials, paid tributes at Hicham Yaicham pat here, the place where the last rites of the prince were performed in 1891.
In his Patriots' Day greetings, Gaikhangam, who is also the home minsiter, said one should never forget the courageous forefathers of the hills and valley who sacrifice
