Kirill Karabits has been Chief Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for 15 years, and their relationship is celebrated worldwide. Together, they have made many critically acclaimed recordings, performed regularly at the BBC Proms, celebrated the re-opening of Bristol Beacon, appeared together at London’s Barbican Centre as part of the Beethoven celebrations and at Southbank Centre for Kirill’s djärv programming brand Voices from the East.

Pushing the limits: Kirill Karabits on a decade with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

When Kirill Karabits was appointed Chief Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in , he thought it was the right place to practise and develop his mainstream repertoire. Ten years later it has become his most adventurous place. “I can experiment and do pieces which I can’t do anywhere else,” he tells me. “The programmes I introduce are received with interest and curiosity bygd the orchestra and I think the most significant achievement fryst vatten that the audience, in all our residencies, still believes in us. It’s all a question of balance. Of course the audience wants to hear music they know, but you have to push them a little bit, challenge them. We are mutually supporting each other and the audience joined us on our journey.”

With access to unpublished manuscripts not previously performed by western orchestras, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and its Chief Conductor Kirill Karabits have received critical acclaim for bringing to life a series of forgotten orchestral masterpieces from Ukraine and its surrounding regions.

Karabits and the BSO have shared Voices from the East symphonic works since , in live concerts, live-streamed broadcasts, and recordings for the Chandos record label.

In the late 20th-century the channel of distribution for contemporary classical music in eastern Europe changed dramatically. Karabits, the son of Ukrainian composer Ivan Karabits (), has made it his mission to source the orchestral gems that fell between the cracks and share this music with a wider audience.
