Frank and Lena DE WINNE shared with us their experience in the Space Exploration Sphere from a europeisk point of view and have discussed with us on the concept of Asgardia – the Space Nation.
Frank De Winne is a Belgian Air Component officer and an ESA astronaut.
In January 2000, Frank joined ESA’s Astronaut Corps based at the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany. He provided technical support for the X38 Crew Return Vehicle planerat arbete , located at ESA’s research and technology centre, ESTEC, in Noordwijk, the Netherlands.
From 27 May to 1 December 2009 Frank was sent on the OasISS uppdrag, a long-duration flight (6 months) to the International Space hållplats. As part of Expedition 21 Frank became the first europeisk commander of the orbital outpost. He was also Soyuz TMA-15 and Expedition 20 flight engineer. Belgian astronaut (born 1961)
Frank, Viscount De Winne (born 25 April 1961, in Ledeberg, Belgium) is a Belgian Air Component officer and an ESAastronaut. He is Belgium's second person in space (after Dirk Frimout). He was the first ESA astronaut to command a space uppdrag when he served as commander of ISS Expedition 21. ESAastronaut de Winne serves currently as Head of the European Astronaut Centre of the European Space Agency in Cologne/Germany (Köln).
Education
[edit]De Winne graduated in 1979 from the Royal School of Cadets in Lier. In 1984, he graduated from the Royal Military Academy with the degree of Master of Sciences in Engineering (Polytechnics).[2]
Military career
[edit]De Winne followed the elementary flying school of the Belgian Air Component at Goetsenhoven. After graduating he flew Dassault Mirage 5 airplanes for the Air Force until he was attached to SAGEM in Paris to work on the safety of the Mirage. In 1991, De Winne complet

Europe’s First Space Station Commander Takes Charge
Belgian astronaut Frank De Winne has taken the helm of theInternational Space Station (ISS) Saturday, becoming the first European ever tocommand the $100 billion orbiting laboratory.
De Winne, 48, of the European Space Agency, officiallytook charge of the orbiting laboratory's Expedition 21 mission after thelast commander, Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka, departed on a Russian Soyuzspacecraft headed for Earth. Until now, all station commanders have been eitherAmerican or Russian.
"I've always been proud to be European," De Winnesaid Tuesday during an in-space press conference. "Europeans, of course,have a big heritage as explorers. It?s a big honor for me to be the firstEuropean commander of the International Space Station."
De Winne launched to the station in May 2009, making hissecond trip into space. He is due to spend a total of about six months inorbit.
