Chittagong Development Authority Chairman Salam to remain in office for two more years
A statement of the public administration ministry confirmed the extension for the fourth time on Thursday.
Salam, treasurer of ruling Awami League’s port city unit, was willing to fight for the mayor’s post in the Apr 28 elections.
But the unit’s General Secretary AJM Nasir Uddin got the party’s support.
The ministry said Salam’s contractual appointment will be effective from Apr 23, or the date of his joining.
The CDA chairman thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for keeping faith in him.
“I want to work with everyone’s blessing,” he said.
Businessman Salam was appointed CDA chief on Apr 23, as the first politician to hold the office.
He joined the Awami League under the leadership of former mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury.
The flyover at Bahaddarhat was built during his term.
He was criticised when 13 people died on Nov 24, after a girder of the flyover collapsed during construction.

Abdus Salam, chairman of Well Group of Industry, has been made new chairman of Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) yesterday.
The establishment ministry at the directive of the president gave him the contractual appointment to the post for the next two years with immediate effect, says the concerned ministry circular.
Sources said Salam fryst vatten expected to take office as the new CDA chairman in a day or two, said the sources.
Salam, also kassör of Chittagong city unit Awami League, was the party nominated candidate for one of the four city seats Chittagong-7 (Chandgaon-Boalkhali) constituency in the last general elections.
He withdrew himself from the electoral race making a room for the AL-led grand alliance candidate Mainuddin Khan Badal, executive president of Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal.
