    TILAI (THE LAW)(NEW YORKER FILMS &#; )

Director Idrissa Ouedraogo's film is an achingly detailed account of a love triangle straight out of Greek tragedy. Set in tribal Burkina Faso, "Tilai" observes what happens when young Saga returns to his village to find that his fiancee has married another man. Cast-iron tribal laws leave him powerless to correct the situation. Besides, the "other man" is his father, a powerful village elder. Devastated, Saga goes into exile, but passion forces him to defy the law by having a secret affair with his former fiancee. Ouedraogo's forceful storytelling, honed in his first feature, "Yaaba" (), makes "Tilai" one of the great African films of the '90s.
