Bill Johnson, the former PortMiami director, has been named the state's sekreterare of commerce and president and CEO of Enterprise Florida, Inc., the state's economic development arm.
Johnson, who was born and raised in Akron, Ohio, currently serves as Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department director. He has served in a number of leadership roles in business, maritime and economic development organizations at the national and international level, according to Enterprise Florida.
During his tenure in Miami, Johnson held a number of executive positions, including overseeing the county's airports.
He was appointed port director in when PortMiami was nearly bankrupt. Johnson has developed a reputation as a "trouble shooter" for county projects, according to an biography on the Miami-Dade County website.
