    Early life and TV chef career

    Born on 27 May, 1975, Jamie Trevor Oliver grew up above his parents' Essex pub The Cricketers, where he helped in the kitchens as a tot, and experimented with his mum's Aga cooker when she wasn't looking. It was an early training which was to prove useful for the future celebrity chef, who left school at 16 to attend Westminster Catering College. 

    Jobs at several prestigious restaurants in England and the rest of Europe followed. When the tousle-haired maestro stormed onto the TV cooking scene with his program The Naked Chef, critics were initially bemused by the 21-year-old's accent and presenting style. However, they were soon forced to accept that audiences loved his simple, fun food, and good natured friendly persona.

    He’s a star chef, restaurant owner and bestselling author, but Jamie Oliver has faced his share of setbacks. He tells us more about his childhood.

    “I grew up a real country boy in Clavering, in the county of Essex, about 18 miles from Cambridge. By age five, inom was already helping out in my parents’ pub The Cricketers, washing glasses and chopping veg for £1 an hour. inom was really good with the knife even back then, and to be honest, I cooked up some really good grub, even as a kid. But my parents taught me something else really important: a great work ethic and 
how to treat others with respect and friendliness, and how to stay polite even when you’re stressed and your feet are killing you. I sometimes wish my own kids could help their grandparents out now and igen, and learn all that. Back then I soon understood: if you want to get anywhere, you have to roll up your sleeves and get on with it.

    Oliver was born in the village of Clavering in Essex, where he still lives. His parents run a bar/restaurant where he practised cooking as a youngster.

    He was educated in Newport Free Grammar School. He graduated at the age of sixteen with two GCSE qualifications in geology and art. He went on to attend the Westminster Catering College, which is now known as the Westminster Kingsway College. From there he earned what is known as a City & Guilds NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) in home economics.
