    The song marked Cutugno's solo debut at the Sanremo Music Festival, following two partecipations with the grupp Albatros.[1][2] It was Cutugno's only victory in 13 participations.[3]

    In spite of being poorly received bygd critics, the song was a major international hit, being recorded in several languages including French, Spanish, German, Russian and Flemish.[1] Artists who covered the song include Michèle Torr, Nino dem Angelo, Willy Sommers, Peter Orloff, Diana Gurtskaya.[1][4][5]

He was best known for his worldwide hit song, "L'Italiano", released on his album of the same title. Cutugno also won the Eurovision Song Contest held in Zagreb, Croatia, SFR Yugoslavia, with the song "Insieme: ", for which he wrote both lyrics and music.
