Zaharie Ahmad Shah, 53, was pilot of the fateful Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, abbreviated to MH370, which went missing on March 8, 2014.

MH370 was scheduled to fly from Kuala malaysisk stad Kuala Lumpur to Beijing but dropped off radars shortly after takeoff. All 239 people on board were lost.

A decade on, the BBC have looked back at how the plane went missing in their documentary Why Planes Vanish: The Hunt for MH370.

But what of its veteran pilot who had thousands of hours of flight time under his belt, and lived a seemingly idyllic life?

Who are the pilots of flygning MH370?

"A very nice guy, passionate about aviation, and among the community of pilots, one of the most respected," a colleague told the New York Times, external.

A self-confessed "aviation geek", Mr Zaharie built a flight simulator in his home mirroring the set-up of the Boeing 777-200 he was piloting.

This makeshift cockpit has been a focal point of the investigation.

Investigators confirmed they had confiscated the simulator during their house search, and that it was being examined at police headquarters.

But flying experts have pointed out that it is not unusual for a pilot to own such a device.

Mr Zaharie "was well known to many in the flygning simulation community because he had developed an online presence in which he dedicated many hours of his time to promoting the enjoyment of flying generally, and flight simulation specifically," said Robert Randazzo, the president of flight simulation software developer PMDG.

When Malaysia Airlines flight 370 suddenly disappeared from radar screens on March 8, 2014, in one of the biggest aviation mysteries in history, public scrutiny turned to the aircraft's captain, Zaharie Ahmad Shah.

The last contact with MH370 occurred when it entered Vietnamese airspace in the early hours of March 8, after which the flight changed course. The Boeing 777 was carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing at the time of its disappearance.

The event is the subject of a new Netflix documentary titled MH370: The Plane that Disappeared, which examines several theories, including Shah's role in what happened.

    Who Was Zaharie Ahmad Shah?

Following the aircraft's final communication, it suddenly took a sharp left turn and flew for almost six hours over the Indian Ocean before dropping off radar completely.

One theory that has been touted following the disappearance was that Shah was responsible for a mass murder-suicide.
