    Members of the Benld City Council declared multiple city properties as surplus property on Monday night and voted to offer them for sale via sealed bids. Additionally, the council approved the final payment for playground equipment installed at the new Benld Family Sports Complex and authorized the repair of a culvert on North Fourth Street at East Walnut Street.

    Benld aldermen approved three resolutions presented by City Attorney Rick Verticchio to declare surplus property and offer the property for sale.

    Resolution designates North Fourth Street as excess property and offers it for sale.

    Resolution declares South Fifth Street, East huvud Avenue, East Central Avenue, North Seventh Street, South Seventh Street and North Main as excess properties. Ald. Jerry Saracco questioned whether or not the city could limit the time buyers will have to abate properties that have been declared nuisances. As

  • Manar to resign from Illinois Senate

    Sen. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, announced his resignation from the Illinois Senate on Monday, effective Jan. 17, and will take a job as a senior adviser to Gov. JB Pritzker.

    Pritzker said that Manar, 45, would provide insight on a wide range of issues, from the economy of central and southern Illinois to state funding and the continued COVID recovery.

    "Andy has been one of the most thoughtful and successful lawmakers of his generation," Pritzker said in a news release. "I value his insights and look forward to him joining my administration as we overcome this pandemic and rebuild Illinois together."

    In announcing his departure from the Senate, Manar said that he was proud of the work that he had done to pass legislation such as school reform, automatic voter registration and minimum wage for teachers and others. He said that he would cherish his time in the Senate bringing the perspective of his constituents to the floor of the chamber.
